What Race Is Sarah Hyland?

When watching Modern Family, Haley Dunphy, played by Sarah Hyland, always seemed a bit too latina looking to be Claire and Phil's daughter. Yesterday I watched the comedy Cougars Inc. In Cougars inc, Sarah Hyland looked even more "mixed" than she does in Modern Family. Yet her parents (Jim Belushi and Denise Richards) in Cougars Inc were both white just like in Modern Family. So what's going on here? A curious case of bad casting or what? So I googled a bit to find out what race or ethnicity she is and found out that she's of Irish, Scottish, Dutch and Welsh descent. Could this be a case of "throw-back" where for example Spanish or Italian ancestral attributes suddenly show up a few generations down the line?
